Plant Introductions

Our nursery has been actively selecting new plant cultivars for the past 27 years. We are most interested in tough, durable plants that will perform well in heavy alkaline soils and survive our rugged climate. With the millions of plants that have passed through our nursery over the years we have found numerous improved plants. We hope you will try some of our new cultivars and see for yourself.

For information on plant trialing, testing agreements, trademark licensing agreements or patent licensing to propagate and sell these introductions, please call or email me if you have questions.

Broadleafs

Buxus sinica var. insularis ‘Bob’                           Sweet ‘n Low™ Boxwood
Zone 4    H: 2'        S: 5'
This cultivar originated at Johnson’s Nursery in the early 1980’s.  Michael Yanny selected it from plants purchased from the Trautman Nurseries in the mid-1970’s. Sweet ‘n Low™ Boxwood is basically a compact ‘Wintergreen’ Boxwood, having the same excellent winter leaf color. The original plant that was selected is about 2’ tall and 5’ wide at approximately 25 years old.  It has had cuttings taken from it numerous times during that period. Crops of Sweet ‘n Low™ Boxwood in the fields at Johnson’s Nursery are typically two-thirds to one-half the scale of the same aged ‘Wintergreen’ Boxwoods in the same fields. A growers license may be obtained by contacting Michael Yanny.

Buxus sinica var. insularis ‘Herbs Dark Green’
Herbs Dark Green Boxwood
Zone 3    H: 3-4’    S: 3-4’
Another Herbert Trautman selection. Fine-textured, very free branching plant with excellent glossy dark green summer foliage.
