Certain plants have amazing fruit displays which can brighten up any winter landscape. They are also very attractive to hungry birds that stay in Wisconsin for the winter. Avoid salt injury to your plants by salting only high-risk areas such as, stairs or slopes. Mixing about 5% salt with other abrasive materials, like sand, can also assist in keeping your plants healthy and cut down on rock salt costs.

Instead of cutting back all your perennials for winter, examine which ones have winter interest. Many perennials such as Autumn Joy Sedum, Coneflowers, and many others stand-up throughout the winter providing color, textures and bird interests. Ornamental grasses, Which are the stars of the autumn garden, continue their appeal into winter as well.

To prevent root damage caused by freezing and thawing, mulch perennial beds with branches cut from your Christmas tree after the holidays.
