Current Positions Available

PROPAGATION INTERNSHIP

Student intern will gain valuable “real-world” propagation and production experience in the landscape nursery field through daily interaction and job shadowing with experienced, veteran growers and production managers within this 13 week (500 to 600 hours) full time summer program from late May through August.

Educational Opportunity:
    - Experience with emphasis in propagation, and production of landscape nursery crops 
    - Rare Midwestern opportunity to see bareroot field production of whips and liners 
    - Unique opportunity to work with a plant breeder on plant selection and development 
    - Hands on experience with landscape install/construction

Container Production
(approx. 75% of workload)
    - Potting/Production Line

Propagation (approx. 10% of workload)

Seed collection, processing, and sowing

Softwood cutting

Research and Development (approx. 5% of  workload)

Involvement with plant improvement projects

Field Liner Production (approx. 5% of workload)

Production, propagation, and growing activities related to field liner production

Requirements
:
    -
Must be a student of Horticulture, or a related field
    -
Avid interest in interest in horticulture propagation and production
    -
Devoted to developing a career in the Nursery-Landscape industry
    -
Keep a daily log of work and learning experiences to be reviewed by Johnson’s Nursery internship supervisor.

    - $350 per week Stipend

DESIGN/BUILD INTERNSHIP

Student intern will gain valuable “real-world” experience in the landscape design/build field through daily interaction and job shadowing with experienced, veteran designers and foreman.

Educational Opportunity:
    - Firsthand look at how a multi-dimensional landscape company operates in peak season
    - Understanding the importance of implementing proper design techniques based upon site conditions, challenges and client wants/needs
    - Understanding the importance of client communication and how to deal with their concerns in a beneficial manner for both the client and the company
    - Experiencing the physical demands of the installation phase and how understanding the proper procedures lead to efficient and cost effective results
    - Learning “project management” and the reasons and rewards of a harmonious relationship between client, designer, foreman and laborer on a project

Landscape Architect/Designer’s Assistant (approx. 70% of workload)

Site analysis, measurements, and grades

Understanding estimate development

Hardscape installations: Brick walks/patios, stone walls/steps, lighting
Production and Propagation Assistant (approx. 10% of workload)
    - Hands on experience with the grafting, planting and harvesting processes

Requirements:
Expect full time seasonal employment.  Must be a student of Horticulture, Design/Build, Landscape Architecture or a related field.

Wages:
$9.00-$11.00 to be determined based on experience and background.

RECEPTIONIST
Part-time, seasonal position.  Mid April –October 31st (weather dependent), 18-24 hours per week. Great job opportunity for students!

Hours:
    -Saturday 8am-6pm, Sunday 10am-6pm, weeknight afternoon/evenings until 7pm

Duties:
    -Answer phones, greet customers, point of sale, filing, office cleaning and other basic office tasks

Qualifications:
    -Basic computer knowledge
    -Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task
    -Willingness to learn new things and “wear many hats”
