A Pewaukee Residence

Homeowners Doug and Mary-Heather were looking for texture and color throughout the year for their new home when they contracted Landscape Designer, Gregory John. The beautiful, southern style home led Greg to use plants with a southern atmosphere- magnolia, rhododendron and boxwood. However, Greg also added native plants of Wisconsin, such as serviceberries, which were used for three seasons of interest.

As you approach the front, a brick walkway leads you through a shade garden comprised of boxwood, astilbe, hosta and pachysandra. A specimen dwarf Alberta spruce anchors the large brick stairway leading to the front door, while sarcoxie euonymus softens the sharp lines of the brick and adds vertical interest drawing you up the stairs.

One of the hurdles Greg encountered in choosing plant material was that they needed to be deer resistant due to the existing woods, which surrounds the Carlson property. Also, with the existing woods in mind, Greg chose mortared Lannon flagstone when designing the back patio. Color and fragrance were a concern for the planting area around the patio. Greg chose a combination of trees, shrubs and perennials for this area such as: Coralburst® crabapple, dwarf palibin meyeri lilac, roses, peonies, salvia, coreopsis, catmint and iris.
