Plant Introductions

Our nursery has been actively selecting new plant cultivars for the past 27 years. We are most interested in tough, durable plants that will perform well in heavy alkaline soils and survive our rugged climate. With the millions of plants that have passed through our nursery over the years we have found numerous improved plants. We hope you will try some of our new cultivars and see for yourself.

For information on plant trialing, testing agreements, trademark licensing agreements or patent licensing to propagate and sell these introductions, please call or email me if you have questions.

Shrubs

Berberis thunbergii ‘J.N. Redleaf’                           Ruby Jewel™ Barberry
Zone 4    H: 3-5’    S: 4-5’
Selected from a crop of cuttings purchased from Jewell Nursery in Lake City, Minnesota in the early 90’s. Jewell Nursery had rooted cuttings off of plants that were not damaged from a “barberry killing” winter. We selected an individual from this crop that had glossy red leaves and dense branching. This plant is a great improvement over red barberry seedlings.

Berberis thunbergii ‘J.N. Variegated’                           Stardust™ Barberry
Zone 4    H: 2-4'        S: 4-5'
Stardust™ Barberry originated from a chance seedling produced in 1981 at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc.  Michael Yanny selected the plant for its variegated foliage. The plant grows into a billowy compact mound about 3’ tall by 5’ wide.  From a distance the shrub presents a fresh, light green color, but upon close inspection, reveals its white blotched, variegated leaves.  New growing shoots are bright red in late spring and summer. Unlike many variegated plants, Stardust™ Barberry has an excellent growth rate.  The variegation seems to be very stable.  We have never seen a reversion.A growers license may be obtained by contacting Michael Yanny.

Euonymus europaea ‘Trautman’                           Red Lantern™ Euonymus
Zone 3    H: 5-8'        S: 4-6'
Euonymus europaea ‘Trautman’, Red Lantern™ Euonymus, is a selection made by Herbert F. Trautman, of Trautman Nurseries in Franksville, Wisconsin, sometime prior to 1970.  This cultivar has not been propagated or promoted to any extent. Red Lantern™ was selected for its smaller, more compact habit than the species.  A 20+ year old plant at Johnson’ Nursery, Inc. is about 7’ tall and 5’ wide.  The species typically matures at twice this size. Red Lantern™ also differs from other selections of this species by having an outstanding red fall color – similar to that of Euonymus alatus.  Most Euonymus europaea have no fall color. The fruit display is outstanding.  After the colorful fall foliage drops, many bright red, tiny lantern-like fruit become noticeable.  Inside each lantern appear bright orange berries.  This display extends the fall ornamental appeal of the plant for over a month.A problem with Euonymus europaea, including Red Lantern™, can be the Euonymus caterpillar.  This may limit the plants use and should be considered in evaluation. A growers license is required by law to sell this plant using the name Red Lantern™ Euonymus.

Viburnum carlesii ‘J.N. Select’                         Spiced Bouquet™ Viburnum
Zone 4    H: 4-6'        S: 5-7'
Spiced Bouquet™ Viburnum was selected in the late 1980’s by Michael Yanny at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc.  This cultivar has a denser growth habit than the typical Viburnum carlesii seedling, as well as a pronounced glossy sheen to the leaves. Other characteristics are typical of the species, including the intense, sweet-spiced flower fragrance. A growers license may be obtained by contacting Michael Yanny.

Viburnum dentatum ‘J.N. Select’        Red Feather® Arrowwood Viburnum
Zone 3    H: 8-10'        S: 10-12'
Red Feather® Viburnum was selected in June 1989 by Michael Yanny at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc., from a group of seedling plants.  It was noticed in the block because of its beautiful red new foliage.  As the new foliage ages, green veins appear on the red surfaces, giving the leaves a colorful, feather-like design.  Eventually, when leaf expansion ceases, the leaves take on a solid, lustrous green color. Red Feather® has an outstanding, long lasting, maroon fall color in Southeastern Wisconsin.  Most importantly, its autumn color is consistent from year to year.  Most seedlings and other Viburnum dentatum cultivars have not been nearly as consistent. The habit of Red Feather® Viburnum is similar to the species.  The original plant is about 6’ tall and 5’ wide at about 9 years of age. This new selection should be of value in northern regions of the U.S. and southern Canada where other Viburnum dentatum cultivars have not performed well, especially pertaining to fall color. A growers license may be obtained by contacting Michael Yanny.

Viburnum x ‘Select D’                                 Summer Reflection™ Viburnum
Zone 3    H: 9'        S: 8'
Summer Reflection™ Viburnum was selected in the mid 1990’s by Michael Yanny at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc., from an open pollinated seedling of Viburnum mongolicum.  Viburnum x rhytidophylloides ‘Alleghany’ is suspected as being the pollen source. Summer Reflection™ Viburnum was selected for its shiny, dark green, 4” long by 2” wide leathery leaves.  Its foliage quality is outstanding.  Fall color can be a rich wine red color if conditions are right. Flowering and fruiting characteristics are similar to Viburnum lantana.  Creamy-white flat-topped flower clusters appear in May followed by attractive clusters of fruit in August that change from yellow to red before maturing to black. This cultivar will grow to approximately 9’ tall and 8’ wide with an oval outline. A growers license may be obtained by contacting Michael Yanny,

Viburnum trilobum ‘J.N. Select’                                   Redwing® Viburnum
Zoen 2    H: 8-12'        S: 8-12'
Viburnum trilobum ‘J.N. Select’ originated in 1983.  It was selected from seedling plants for its showy red growing tips and neat dense habit.  Found by plant propagator, Michael Yanny, at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc.,  ‘J.N. Select’ is a taxonomically correct Viburnum trilobum cultivar as opposed to the many Viburnum opulus plants in the trade being sold under the name of Viburnum trilobum. ‘J.N. Select’ matures at 8-12’ with a similar spread. Three to four inch diameter flat-topped flower clusters appear in mid to late May and are extremely handsome. Clusters of small, bright red fruits remain colorful all winter.  The lush, dark green leaves of ‘J.N. Select’ turn a bright red color in the fall.  The plant has a medium growth rate.  Viburnum crown borer can be a problem when planted in wet soils. The Chicagoland Grows Program has formally introduce Viburnum trilobum ‘J.N. Select’ into the horticulture industry.  The plant has the trademarked name Redwing™ Viburnum.
